EPDM Roofing

A durable and long-lasting method that you can use for your roofs is membrane EPDM roofing. By creating a seamless layer on your roof, it offers waterproofness and durability.

An EPDM membrane is composed of natural EPDM rubber and to increase its durability and make it long-lasting, synthetic fibers are added to it. Although this method of protecting your roof is not that popular yet, many people are already discovering its benefits over other roofing methods like roll roofing, asphalt, tar, and gravel.

Why EPDM is installed on a roof
It’ll best suit you if you have a flat roof with a small incline. Its property of being waterproof will help the roof get rid of water. Also, it is best for the roofs that are used for recreational purposes, like if you want to have a little summer garden on your roof, there is no better option than EPDM roofing.
How an EPDM roof is constructed
The membrane is small in weight and is 0.8 to 2mm thick which makes it suitable for any roof without any special reinforcement. It doesn’t need any special equipment to be installed which makes it a cost-friendly option for both the customer and the company. Also, it takes less time as compared to the other material from the bitumen type.

Types of Installation and Repair:

There are many ways through which EPDM roof membrane can be installed. The best and most effective way is to weld the pieces of material with hot air that can give your roof a seamless and smooth surface. It is done through the help of a special machine that gives off hot air and helps to establish a membrane over the roof but the corners, flashing and other parts of the roof that need special attention are done manually by the workers with the help of special tools. Doing it by hot air and manually ensures that the membrane covers the whole area and no space is left.

Another thing that can be used to install a membrane is double-sided adhesive tape. But the drawback of it is that it is less durable than other options.

Although the installation of the membrane is quite easy, it is important to give special attention to the water insulations of those areas from where old pieces were removed. You should ensure that they are removed completely and new pieces are placed there if you don’t want to remove your entire roof and replace it. This will ensure that there will be no water leakage and the membrane will remain intact for a long time. For this, you can get in touch with our professional staff that will help you out with all of this stuff and will make the installation easier.

What is EPDM?

So, as we already have told you how you can install EPDM, now we will be telling you about what it is and what its characteristics are.

EPDM is an abbreviation for Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer and it’s a rubber roofing material. It is mostly used for non-residential areas and is applied on commercial roofs. It is gaining immense popularity because it is durable and possesses characteristics that make it the best fit for any kind of commercial roof.

Some of the characteristics that make it hard-wearing are:

  • Proven resistance to harsh weather conditions, ozone, and abrasion
  • Proven hail resistance
  • Flexibility to low temperature
  • Thermal shock durability
  • Excellent tear resistance
  • Resistance from fire and heat
  • UV resistance and flexibility pass -60 degrees Celsius
  • Wind uplift ratings including 1-60, 1-90, and 1-120
  • Helps in the reduction of energy usage

Installation of EPDM membrane:

There are two ways through which you can install an EPDM membrane. One method is to install it with the help of an adhesive and the second method is by loosely laying it and then pressing it by weight. The latter one is more feasible and a better choice because you don’t need to use heavy machinery or equipment for that which is a plus point. Wind can cause problems when you go for the adhesive option. It can be difficult to manage the big rolls in wind and debris can get attached to the adhesive because of wind. Because of this lumps can form which can be problematic in the adhesion of the membrane to the surface. We would also recommend you to go for the second option. It can last up to 10,000 square feet long and makes the installation much easier than the traditional modified bitumen.

EPDM Longevity:

The longevity of an EPDM membrane largely depends on the surrounding conditions. It depends upon the water retention and the time water takes to evaporate in that area. Its lifespan ranges from 12 to 25 years which may seem to be short as compared to other roofing options but it can be easily repaired if any damage happens to it. As EPDM rolls are wide and long, so the potential leaks are rare which guarantees their durability.
